We have had an interesting month with lots of changes to the way we structure the evenings. Our biggest change that I believe is a set for the positive is the request book. In this book, attendees will be able to write down a particular game that they would like to play and also they date that they would like to play it. I’m hoping that the requests will be more abundant with this structure as opposed to the requests via Facebook which I find doesn’t get utilized at all.
We also started an achievement system for the regulars that come to game night. I’ve been recording scores of all the games played at game night and logging them into Boardgamegeek.com app for digitized statistics. I’ve been able to keep up with the lighter crowd that we have drawn without too much difficulty. Members, as I am calling them, will unlock achievements as they win games at a particular frequency. I also created achievements for other things that I’m trying to encourage like bringing friends, bringing food, and learning new games. This is all in hopes that everyone will attain a certain amount of fulfillment with our game nights but also encouraging member involvement. The pitfalls have not presented themselves as of yet but the writing is on the wall with people getting easily frustrated with the stats. I’m hoping this doesn’t promote unhealthy competition but I’m optimistic of its results. Here are some of the stats that I have collected for the month of May.

My thoughts have been shifting toward the future with lots of new thoughts and leaving behind some of the past. The group is expanding quite rapidly and is well beyond simply having one game running at any point of time. This means that we have the option of separate groups within the group which I want to encourage in the future. Some people want to play with certain people and should be encouraged to do so. Others would like to play the same game every week and shouldn’t be forced to do otherwise. Players should also not have to play with the core group or with new comers if they choose not to. It’s the job of the host to do all the glad handling of new players and people wanting to play a game and has no players. I will do my best to make sure that everyone at game night is having the most fun possible and doesn’t feel unwelcome. It isn’t anyone else’s job to take on the responsibilities of hosting when they are not the host. Although I will recommend that people be open to including others as being an island is the quickest way to playing more solo games.
